The NFL Draft is all about guessing and prediction Donte Jackson Jersey 2019 , and now that the season has ended we are going to start prognosticating the hell out of it. Part of doing that is analyzing the Carolina Panthers needs and seeing how they line up with general manager Marty Hurney’s draft history. Today we are going to look at offensive tackle, which in my book continues to be the most vital need we have on the left side.To assist in giving Hurney an overall grade for how he has done drafting this position over the years, I’ve come up with a simple point system that grades each selection on two criteria. For a full breakdown of how this works, refer back to this article, but here is a low level summary.Player Quality: Zero to six scale. Six points for a franchise cornerstone/hall of fame grade player, five for an excellent starter, four for a good starter, three for an average starter, two for quality depth/rotational player, one for depth, zero for a total non-contributing bust.Pick Importance: Negative two to one scale. Negative two for first round picks, negative one for second and third round picks, zero for fourth and fifth rounders, and one point for anything beyond that. The logic here is that in the first round you need to at least grab an average starter to get a positive score, while ideally you should be getting someone great. Meanwhile in the late rounds, most prospects never become anything of note, so you aren’t penalized for that. For scaling purposes, using this system Luke Kuechly and Kawann Short would both be a four, a guy like Tom Brady would be a super rare seven, and Captain Munnerlyn would be a three.Over the course of Marty Hurney’s career, he has drafted eight players classified as a offensive tackle. Here is the list:2003, Round 1 (8): Jordan Gross DJ Moore Jersey 2019 , (6 + -2 = 4)2004, Round 3 (94): Travelle Wharton, (4 + -1 = 3)2005, Round 6 (207): Joe Berger, (3 + 1 = 4) had a good career after we cut him.2006, Round 3 (89): Rashad Butler, (1 + 1 = 2)2008, Round 1 (19): Jeff Otah, (1 + -2 = -1) for one good year.2008, Round 7 (241): Geoff Schwartz, (4 + 1 = 5)2009, Round 5 (163): Duke Robinson, (0 + 0 = 0)2011, Round 7 (244): Lee Ziemba, (0 + 1 = 1)Marty Hurney has a common theme developing in these charts, which we all know too well. Had it not been for a high profile bust in this position group, he’d actually have been a good drafter. But, like the defensive end chart before this one, there’s always one high profile trade that ends up being a total bust and screwing up his average. His overall average is 2.25, slightly above the average 2, but it could have been so much better if you change Otah’s -1 to a 3 or 4.Marty Hurney actually broke the chart when he drafted Jeff Otah. This franchise has been ailing for a solid left tackle for a very long time now, and there is an obvious reason why. The Carolina Panthers have not selected a prospective left tackle since Travelle Wharton in 2004. For some reason Blue DJ Moore Jersey , they thought Jordan Gross was going to play forever, and completely ignored the fact they would need to groom someone to take over for him some day. So once again, for that reason, we will enter yet another draft with tackle as a priority and just hope for the best.CSR Eight for the 8-Ball: bye week edition Welcome to this edition of “CSR Eight for the 8-ball” where we use the power of random chance to answer all your complicated Carolina Panthers questions!
